Use when writing, editing, reviewing or repairing an academic paper or any of its sections (abstract, introduction, related work, methodology, results, conclusion), or when a paper's bibliography, citations, captions, contributions or LaTeX need work. Symptoms - overlong captions, bloated contribution bullets, hand-typed BibTeX, invented citation keys, margin overflow, undefined citations, British spellings, internal run tags or draft scaffolding left in a .tex, an abstract and conclusion that disagree. Also for a literature survey backing a paper. For an internal engineering results report use technical-report-maker; for a stakeholder document with a cover page use management-report-maker.

# ieee-paper — an academic paper for a strong venue Papers are written in **IEEE two-column LaTeX** and built with latexmk. This skill covers authoring a new paper, writing or rewriting any single section, running the literature survey, and auditing an existing draft. **What must be present, and what to do when it is not.** Check before promising a step, and say so plainly rather than working around a missing dependency: | Capability | Needs | If absent | |---|---|---| | Build, render, check | `latexmk`, `pdflatex`, poppler-utils, `python3` | Hard requirement. Stop and say so. | | Literature survey | the **Exa** MCP plugin (`mcp__plugin_exa_exa__web_search_exa`) | Ask the user for the references; do not invent them. | | Real Scholar citation keys | **Claude in Chrome** + a human for the CAPTCHA | Repair fields from Crossref with `fetch_bib.py`, leave keys alone, and tell the user they are unverified. | | Bibliography field repair | network access to Crossref | Report the entries as unverified. | `IEEEtran.cls`/`.bst` ship in `tools/`; nothing needs installing for them. ## Read the conventions first Two files, both binding, both in this bundle: - **`reference/paper-conventions.md`** — the rule set. It marks each rule **BINDING** (wrong at any venue, fix it) or **CALIBRATED** (an observed default with a range, a paper may depart from it for a reason). Read the header before applying anything. - **`reference/paper-exemplars.md`** — measured GOOD and BAD excerpts with
