# docs-competitor-gap
The first skill in this catalog that looks outside your own workspace.
A competitor's documentation is the most honest artefact they publish. Marketing
pages say what they wish were true; docs say what the product actually does,
which questions their customers actually ask, and which of those they thought
worth answering in public. Reading it is not espionage — it is the same page
their prospects and yours read before deciding.
The dangerous version of this analysis is a diff of two tables of contents,
which produces a list that says "they have 40 pages you do not" and quietly
implies you should write 40 pages. Most of that list is wrong for you: their
enterprise SSO guide exists because they sell to enterprises, their migration
guide exists because they are migrating people off the tool *you* also compete
with, and half their reference pages document features you deliberately do not
have. **The output of this skill is not the difference between two sitemaps. It
is the small subset of that difference that would actually earn you something.**
**Mode: audit.** It reads, compares, and ranks. It writes no pages and edits
none — the queue it produces is handed to whoever writes.

- Before a quarter's content planning, to decide what to write from evidence
