# Direct-Response Copywriting ## Overview Direct-response copy is measured by action, not by admiration. The work is 60% research, 30% angle selection, and 10% writing. Copy that gets rewritten repeatedly without lift almost always has a research problem, not a wording problem. **Never start writing without the research artifact.** If you cannot quote the customer's own words about their problem, you are not ready. ## When to Use - Writing ads, emails, landing pages, VSL scripts, SMS, or sales collateral - Rewriting copy that underperforms - Building messaging for a new offer or vertical - Producing variants for creative testing Don't use for: designing the offer (use `offer-and-pricing-design`) or page layout and technical build (use `landing-page-and-funnel-build`). ## Step 1 — Research Before Writing Gather these five artifacts. Copy written without them is guesswork. 1. **Voice-of-customer language.** Pull verbatim phrases from reviews, sales-call transcripts, support tickets, forum threads, and competitor review sections. Collect 20+ raw quotes. The phrase the customer uses is almost always better than the phrase you would invent. 2. **The awareness state.** Where is the reader on the spectrum: unaware of the problem, problem-aware, solution-aware, product-aware, most-aware?
