Options: a story, a surprising statistic, a provocative question, a quotation, a demonstration. Not: "Today I'm going to talk about..." (this is an announcement, not a hook). 2. **Thesis.** State the central claim or purpose in one sentence. The audience should be able to repeat it. 3. **Preview.** Tell them what you will cover.
