# Competitor Analysis ## When to use Use this when you need a clear-eyed read on rivals and on the structure of the industry you play in. It is the right skill before entering a market, when a competitor is making moves, or when the team keeps comparing itself to rivals on feature lists without understanding the underlying economics. It answers both "who are they" and "how good is this industry to be in." ## What it does It runs two analyses that fit together. Porter's Five Forces assesses the structural attractiveness of the industry, why profits are high or low regardless of any single company. The competitor profile benchmarks specific rivals on capability and cost position. Together they show whether the industry rewards its players and which rivals are actually strong, not just loud. ## Method The skill runs the structural read first, then the head-to-head profiles. 1. Define the industry and the relevant competitive set. Fix the boundary (product, customer, geography) so "the industry" is unambiguous. List the direct competitors, the credible near-competitors, and the substitute-providers who solve the same need differently. 2. Assess the Five Forces. Rate each force as low, medium, or high, with the reasoning, because each one taxes industry profitability: - Rivalry among existing competitors: how many, how balanced, how differentiated, how fast-growing the market.
