# Paragraphs, not a wall of text A message of three or more sentences goes out in paragraphs: first sentence alone, last sentence alone, the middle in pairs, a blank line between blocks. Two sentences stay together, unless together they run longer than 200 characters, then one per paragraph. The words never change. ## Why People read messages on a phone. A block of text with no breaks gets skimmed or skipped. We asked our writers for paragraphs several times, and it did not stick. Then we counted. In 30 days, 630 of 692 LinkedIn messages we sent had not a single line break. For InMail it was 80 of 96. The evening we counted, 34 of 35 queued messages were walls. The reason: several different loops write into the same queue (sourcing, follow-ups, replies, manual edits). A formatting rule in each writer's prompt runs on attention, so it does not run. The fix that held was to put the formatting at the one place every message passes through on the way out. Two sentences also make a wall. We saw four messages of 251 to 333 characters go out as solid blocks: each was two long sentences joined with a colon, so a "three sentences or more" rule never touched them. ## How to apply 1. Put the formatter at the exit, not in the writer. Whatever sends the message runs it last. `python3 scripts/paragraphs.py message.txt` 2. The rule: - 1 sentence: leave it. - 2 sentences: leave them, unless longer than 200 characters, then split into two paragraphs. - 3+ sentences: first
