# Words, Numbers, Images — Together ## Overview Evidence bearing on any question of complexity arrives in several forms at once: prose, measurements, pictures, diagrams, tables. Tufte's argument in *Beautiful Evidence* ch. 3 (printed pp. 82–121) is that **the separation of these forms is an artifact of production convenience, not a property of the evidence** — and that the separation is actively enforced by publishing technology, software architecture, and design convention, usually against the intentions of the author and always against the interests of the reader. His framing claim: evidence is evidence, whether it arrives as words, numbers, images, diagrams, still or moving. It is all information. For readers and viewers, **the intellectual task is constant regardless of mode** — understand the material, reason about it, and appraise its quality, relevance, and integrity. Nothing in that task licenses sorting evidence into a text section, a figures section, and an appendix. The chapter's evidentiary spine is a 300-year natural experiment: Newton's *Opticks*, whose figures were severed from its text in 1704 and stayed severed across 23 editions in 5 languages.
