Use when back matter, a reference list, an appendix, a component library, a design-system doc, an asset registry, a figure list, a research repository, a changelog, or a portfolio archive has become an alphabetical wall of strings nobody browses — or when deciding how to order and key a reference apparatus so readers can recognize entries by sight and by position instead of searching for an exact string.

# A Visual Index: Remodeling Back Matter into a Browsable Quilt ## Overview *Seeing With Fresh Eyes* ch. 9 (printed **pp. 162–171**) is unusual among Tufte's chapters: it has almost no prose, because the chapter **is** the thing it argues for. It is the book's own source apparatus, rebuilt so that each cited item appears as a small picture of itself beside its citation, ordered by where it occurs in the book. Tufte's stated reasoning occupies four lines at the top of p. 162, and contains three separate claims worth separating: 1. **The realistic premise.** Not many readers go to the back matter to look up the source of a single sentence. Back matter is designed for a use that rarely happens. 2. **The reframe.** Back matter *can be read as ordinary text*, revealing a history of the content and its sources — a readable narrative of where a book came from, not a lookup table. 3. **The payoff.** Images and illustrations from the book, gathered in the back matter, form a visual/verbal summary quilt of the entire book — something a general reader will actually browse. The book's own remodeling table (p. 9) lists this chapter as one row: **text and image quilts replace book back-matter and references.** That is the whole skill. Everything below is the anatomy, the transferable rules, and the failure modes. > Scope note: this is the smallest chapter in the book, and this is correspondingly the shortest skill in the pack. It is standalone because the principle transfers cleanly
