# Documentation SEO
Documentation is the most under-optimised high-value asset on almost every software site. It ranks for enormous long-tail volume, it's what existing customers search for, and it is disproportionately what AI assistants quote when answering questions about your product.
It's also usually hosted on a subdomain nobody owns, generated by a tool nobody configured, and excluded from every SEO conversation.
## Why it matters more than the blog
- **Long-tail volume at scale.** Every error message, parameter, endpoint and configuration option is a query.
- **Highest-intent traffic on the site.** Someone searching your docs is using or evaluating the product.
- **The AI citation asset.** When someone asks an assistant how to do something with your product, the answer comes from your docs. If your docs aren't crawlable, the assistant answers from a three-year-old forum post instead.
- **Support deflection**, which is a real cost saving with a measurable number attached.
- **Competitive discovery.** People search "how to do X in [competitor]" and land on whoever documented it best.
