# Law Firm SEO
Legal is one of the most competitive and most expensive search markets there is, and it's a YMYL category where Google applies its highest quality standards. Thin content does not survive here.
It's also intensely local. Most legal searches carry a location, which means the fight is against firms in your city rather than the whole internet — a much more winnable contest than the raw competition suggests.
## What ranking here actually looks like
Open the SERPs for your practice areas. In most legal markets:
- **Head terms** ("personal injury lawyer") show a local pack above the organic results, plus directory sites, plus a few local firms. The local pack is often the whole game.
- **"Near me" and city-modified terms** are dominated by the local pack and firms with strong local signals.
- **Informational legal questions** ("how long do I have to make a claim") increasingly return an AI Overview, and the citations under it are usually a mix of government sources, large publishers and firms with genuinely good explainer content.
- **Long-tail situational queries** ("can I claim if I was partly at fault") are the winnable, high-intent segment most firms ignore.
The strategic implication: **local pack first, situational long-tail second, head terms last.**
## The pages that matter
| Page | Intent | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| **Practice area pages** | Buy | The commercial core. One per service, properly built |
| **Practice area + location pages** |
