# Marketplace SEO
Marketplaces have a structural problem no other site type shares: **most of your pages are worthless, and which ones are worthless changes daily.**
A listing sells and goes stale. A category in a small city has three items. A filter combination has none. Meanwhile the pages that would rank are generated by the same system that generates the empty ones. Managing that is the whole discipline.
## What ranking here actually looks like
Marketplace queries split into three shapes:
- **Category + location** ("flats to rent in Leeds") — the commercial core, contested between the big incumbents and local specialists
- **Category + attribute + location** ("2 bed flats to rent in Leeds with parking") — the long tail, and where a smaller marketplace can actually win
- **Individual item searches** — brand or model specific, driven by listing pages
The incumbents own the head terms through sheer inventory depth and domain authority. A challenger wins by owning attribute combinations the incumbent treats as unindexable filters.
## The pages that matter
