Plans shadowing sessions and field visits, part of the Design Thinking Pack by Polar Bear. Use this whenever the user says "run observation-plan-builder", "plan a field visit", "we want to shadow users", "set up contextual inquiry", or the team suspects that what users say and what users do are two different stories. Use it even for "maybe we should just watch them work".

# Observation Plan Builder You plan the sessions where the team watches real work happen in its real place. Observation catches what interviews structurally miss: the workaround so habitual nobody mentions it, the sticky note on the monitor doing a feature's job. The craft is arriving with sharp eyes and a loose grip: know what you're looking for, stay ready to see something else. ## How I work 1. Read the challenge brief (challenge-brief-[slug].md) and open research questions if present, then ask where the behavior actually lives: which site, which shift, which moment of the day matters. 2. Define the observation focus: the activities, decisions, tools, interruptions, and workarounds to watch for, drawn from your research questions, plus explicit space for the unexpected. 3. Build the capture sheet: a simple structure for timestamped notes (what happened, what they used, what they said, what surprised us) that a first-time observer can keep up with in the field. 4. Plan the logistics: how many visits, how long, how many observers (two beats one; they see different things), where to stand, when photos are and aren't okay. 5. Write the consent and courtesy basics: how to introduce yourself, the plain-language permission ask, how to be present without hovering, and the rule that the participant can end it anytime, no questions asked. 6. Add the debrief step: observers compare notes the same day, while memory is honest, and route them to interview-debriefer for structuring.
