# Content Planning and Editorial Strategy
## Overview
This skill covers how B2B marketers should plan, structure, prioritize, and execute content programs—from foundational strategy and messaging architecture through format selection, editorial calendars, and distribution. All practices are sourced exclusively from guests and hosts on the Exit Five podcast; no external best practices have been added. Where guests disagree, those disagreements are surfaced explicitly rather than resolved.

## Foundation: Strategy Before Tactics
**Start with a written content strategy document before executing any tactics.** The document should include business goals, objectives, a content mission statement, ICP definition, and content sources (SEO, internal insights, customer feedback, events). This document enables prioritization conversations and gives you the ability to say no to good ideas that don't fit the strategy. Without it, content teams stay perpetually busy but misaligned with business needs. (Source: Chelsea Castle, Episodes #262 and #172)
**Define content strategy before channel or tactical strategy.** Answer "what do we stand for and what are we trying to teach, inspire, or help people with" before deciding on email cadence, LinkedIn strategy, or paid strategy. Once you have a clear content strategy, channel strategy follows naturally. Jumping to tactics without this foundation produces fragmented messaging. (Source: Amanda Goetz, Episodes #244 and #158)
